<HTML>The pinning of it on the U-27 was a mistake in the notorious "Baralong" incident. Bernd Wegener of U-27 was crusing in the same general area as the sinking of White Star's "Arabic" by U-24's Rudolf Schneider whcih had happened earlier that day, and Godfrey Herbert, commander of the Q-ship "Baralong", apparently thought he had caught the perpetrator when he happened upon U-27 in the process of sinking the Leyland Line mule ship, "Nicosian". Whether that explains some of the British blood frenzy that followed, I have no idea. As far as I recall, there was also a movement to attribute the sinking to U-38's Max Valentiner.</HTML>
