Thank you for your reply to my e-mail about UB 87.

Please, Sir, it is not MY theory, it is an official U.S.Navy report of the incident which I questioned some time ago when I first saw it. My investigation did not reveal any German (or Austrian) U-boats reported destroyed on or about 6SEP18, but that fact alone did not rule out the possibility of the unidentified submarine being so badly damaged that it could not communicate with its headquarters and was indeed an unconfirmed casualty of the attack by nine chasers supported by other Allied vessels. As such it could very well have been one of the many boats catagorized as "Missing, fate unknown".

The revelation that apparently the assailant was UB 87, which seemingly survived by playing dead and putting out the twenty five false (or misinterpreted) "gunshot" sounds, lends support to the Admiralty's cooler and calmer requrement of the submission of hard physical evidence before granting a "kill" to sometimes overzealous claims by young enthusiastic attackers anxious to report success in the new branch of Naval Science known as Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW).

Would you like to have a copy of the Navy report and battle diagram, gratis, plus a drawing of a 110 Ft wooden hulled submarine chaser to add to your essay ? This would help to achieve a measure of closure to this facet of your grandfather's experience. I will need your postal address, as I lack any means of sending it by e-mail. The chasers are a hobby with me, and it is my pleasure to exchange information about them. I do encourage the free exchange of information, and therefore request a copy of any information you care to please send concerning UB 87 and HMS Persic. My USPS address is:

I have made a highly detailed model of SC 95.

Are you aware of the Ship Modelers Mailing List (SMML)? It is an internet based group of some 1500 or so avid modelers and nautical historians having a combined wealth of information. "Membership" is free.

Can you please tell me the significance of the name "Persic" ?

Franklyn
