Yes, it can be done, but it requires alertness, training, practice and I believe "luck." Grabbing onto the bottom (or the ascent line), flaring, disconnecting the inflator hose, and dumping air out the exhaust valve (or a seal) are all ways of coping, but first you need to be alert.
The goal is to control the ascent, but do it in a way that allows you make it to the surface, with reserve air and without damage.
I believe you can make a meal out of an ordinary dive, but not always.
