Gents,
my great uncle: J75950 Ord. Smn. Ernest Broadhouse (19) was aboard this vessel en route for Mudros and to embark on HMS Europa, sadly he was lost at sea.
She set sail on 1 Jan. 1918 from Portsmouth for the Limnos (Lemnos) Island, via Malta. She left Malta on 18 Jan. at around 15:00 hrs. 20 Jan. she was hit on the port side in the Zea Channel doing around 16 Knts. at 21:30 hrs. HM Torpedo Boat 'Colne' was escorting her. Only 10 survived the sinking.
Hms Louvain was originally SS Dresden constructed in 1897 in Hull and was owned by the Great Western Railway Co. One of her famous passengers who was lost and presumed 'overboard' on one of the ferry crossings between Belguim and England, was Herr Diesel, who gave his name to a perticular engine!
I have full details of the sinking from HM TBD Colne dated 21 Jan. 18. Two torpedoes fired in total, other missing escort.
Also details of Court Martial, whereupon no blame was passed upon any officers or crew of HMS Louvain
