Simon your description matches my grandfather's account of the incident. I did not know the name of the drifter my granfather served on or the ship it went to assist until recently.
I had the good fortune to mention the incident to a work former colleague Mr. Roy Stokes author of "Death in the Irish Sea: The sinking of the RMS Leinster" ISBN: 1-898256-52-7 as he was researching a follow-up book. This new book "U-Boat Alley: The U-Boat war in the Irish Channel during World War 1" ISBN: 0-9549186-0-6 carries a description of U-19s attack of the Calgarian P.181-184 and it also has a photograph of what I assume is the Thomas Collard's crew recovering in hospital in Larne following the incident.
