Hi
Am trying to clarify specifics about USS West Bridge (DANFS Id. No. 2888) which was torpedoed in mid-August 1918 enroute to France in WW 1 while under the command of my great uncle, Lt/Cdr Mortimer Hawkins.
The U Boat.net website (http://uboat.net:8080/wwi/boats/listing.html) has the following info about the activities of the two U Boats in that timeframe:
U 90
15 Aug 1918 Sank USS Montanan
16 August 1918 Damaged USS West Bridge
U 107
15 Aug 1918 Sank Cubore
The latest U Boat.net input I can find in the discussion about this activity was made in 2007.
An extract from the current Naval History and Heritage Command write-up (http://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/w/west-bridge.html) indicates the following.........
Escorted by the converted yacht Noma (S.P. 131) and the French cruiser Marseille, the convoy plodded across the Atlantic. By mid-August, the Allied ships entered the danger zone where U-boats had been highly active. In fact, two German submarines, U-90 and U-107, were then lurking in the path of the convoy.
................
Meanwhile, the convoy continued on its way, when suddenly, shortly before 1800 and four miles ahead of the now drifting West Bridge, German submarine U-90 torpedoed Montanan.
..............
Meanwhile, U-107 approached unseen and launched two torpedoes. One hit West Bridge forward near number 3 hold and the other amidships abreast of the engine room. ..............
This info was posted in December 2015, and I was wondering if there is any new evidence to support the change? I’ve made a similar query of the Naval History and Heritage Command indicating I am interested in the basis for their account.
Thanks for any insights
