Hi Capo,
here is the account of the loss of U-16 derived from Italian and Austro-Hungarian sources:
U 16 attacked the Italian convoy at the latitude of Strade Bianche, Albania (present day Sopri Ruga) and put 2 torpedoes into Nembo. As the DD sank, the sub was too close for safety, the DCs were not on safe and detonated at their preset depth, damaging U 16, breaching the pressure hull and plungng her into darkness from failure of the electrical main. High pressure air was also heard escaping into the hull. U 16 was then at only 8 metres depth and began losing trim, which caused her to drop to 41 metres before control could re-established by emergency blow and all-up on the diving planes.
As she came to the surface, Lt von Zopa ordered the abandon ship and the sub sank in position 40.08 N, 19.30 E. There were 2 dead, the 14 survivors reached the Albanian coast in a lifeboat from Nembo and were taken into custody by the Carabinieri there.
