I should point out that standard practice of the submarine (air) patrols was to "straddle" a surfaced submarine with a pair of bombs (50 to 250lb) and cause pressure damage to the outside of the hull, making it unsafe to submerge..... then radio for a destroyer (properly termed a submarine destroyer but the prefix "submarine" dropped out of use) to come, take on survivors and sink the submarine with gunfire.
It had never been anticipated that aircraft, alone, could sink a submarine..... simply locate them.
After this incident orders were given for "proper" solo attack with larger bombs.
