THanks - that makes perfect sense.
I am examining crew lists given by Spindler to try and determine who were Techniker and who belonged to the Matrosen laufbahns.
I am not finding any Mekaniker rates in Spindler, so I must presume that torpedo handling was carried out by obermatrosen aided by seamen. In British mine laying submarines, mining was usually carried out by POs usually from the stoker branch under instruction from ERAs. Does anyone know whether machinisten or seamen carried out mining duties in U boats ?
