Hello Michael and Clio,
As far as I know,on board of any ship/any time there are at least, 2 different departments : Deck-people/officers and “Machinistsâ€, means Engineers.
The head of this last department is the CHENG, the Chief – Engineer. A “machinist†is thus not related to the deck department; so he can’t become a “commander†of a ship !
“Stockers†are well related to the “Machine/Engine†department.
