you are in error when you think that Germany in WWI didn't used mines which could be dropped out of the torpedo tubes. Gemany has indeed such a type of mines in WWI.
It was the T.K.- or TEKA-mine, 50 cm calibre, length abt. 2 metres, weight of charge abt. 100 kg. The were carried on submarine cruisers, additional on type-UEII and S.M. U 9. As far as I know the USS SAN DIEGO became victim of such a mine laid by S.M. U 156.
As for the mine operations of the UE-boats you should have a look at Spindler's 5 vols. "Der Handelskrieg mit U-Booten" and the War Diaries (KT.
