Look no further for photographs of him for he did not exist by that name. There was certainly not a U-boat commander of that name although there are an Oblt.z.S.O Schenk and a Ltn.z.S.d.R. F Schenk listed in a book of German naval officers of the Great War.
In the original 1920 published book there are some photographs/illustrations but not of the author.

Even 'Etienne' who wrote the forward didn't use his real name. He was, if I remember correctly Commander Stephen King Hall R.N.

Treat it as a noval(roman) and judge it accordingly.
