Regarding the book Diary of a U-Boat Commander, it is well known as one of the greatest romance novels of the twentieth century.

He falls in love, unknowingly, with an allied spy. She is shot by the Germans and he is almost shot for his relationship with her. But they keep him on because they need good U-Boat commanders and they realize that he really did fall in love with someone whose real identity he didn't know.

Her farewell letter to him ranks as one of the best tearjerkers in modern literature.

It isn't seen as a book about naval warfare per se, but I guess it is that as well.
