Gentlemen, I do thank you most sincerely for your help.
I first learnt of the loss of SMU 3 in Kiel Bay on 17.1.1911 and the death of her commander and some of his men many years ago in a copy of "NAUTICUS 1911".
It seems that this and other early peace-time losses of submariners and submarines are virtually unknown to the modern generation of students of submarine warfare. It is a shame really as they were the pioneers.
I do hope that they will not be forgotten and that history will not pass them by.
