I had always understood that he was a U-boat commander but that information was learnt many a long year ago, when we were both a lot younger and less knowledgable than now :-))
I suppose anyone who commanded a U-boat on its short and sad voyage to surrender in the U.K. could officially be classed as a U-boat commander but not in the sense that is generally recognised.
