Gefreiten Ersatz-Rekruten Ernst Friedrich Schultheis
der 7.Komp. 2.Bad. Gren. Regts. Kaiser Wilhelm I. Nr. 110
8. Marz 1917
das Eiserne Kreuz II. Klasse verliehen worden.

My grandfather: dob 15 November 1894; Demberg, Germany
died: 25 February 1974; Glendora, California

He also earned the "silberne Verdienstmedaille am Bande der Militarischen Karl-Friedrich-Verdienstmedaile zu verleihen" on 9 April, 1918 Turned out it wasn't silver but tin coated in silver!

We do not know why he received either one as he chose not to discuss it. He was wounded twice.

If you are interested in a copy of the paperwork, I'd be happy to send it to you.
