Edgar was was my Great Grandad.
Born in 1896 in Grimsby as the oldest of seven to "Teddy" and Nora. Before WWI he lived at the family home of 41 Newmarket Street, Grimsby. At age 18 he served as a trimmer on the fishing trawler “Chameleon”. He got the job alongside his 17 year old friend Francis “Frank” Hanneman, who would later marry Edgar’s oldest sister Ethel.
The Chameleon (Trawler number 106666, GY 105) was built in 1896 and had a crew of 9 people. Frank and Edgar were the youngest aboard.
The Chameleon was last registered in Grimsby in 1914. The Chameleon was captured by the Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal War Navy on August 25th 1914.
Edgar was held initially in Sennelagar military prisoner of war camp alongside British soldiers from the Mons campaign. On October 29th 1915 Edgar and Frank were transferred to the civilian Ruhleben POW camp near Berlin. Soon Edgar was joined in Barrack 5, Loft A by his father Teddy who had been captured on the Manx Queen. After the war Edgar, his father Teddy and his friend Frank travelled back to Grimsby.
Soon after Edgar married Doris and towards the end of the 1920s had three children, Raymond, Gordon and Molly and resettled in Leicester. Frank was lost at sea onboard the Riviere after a collision in thick fog with the British steamer Firelight on the 10th June 1953. The trawler was homeward bound from the West Scotland fishing grounds at the time of the collision and sank quickly after being hit midships on the port side. There were three survivors from a crew of thirteen.

"Samuel Francis Gladstone Coles was captured by the Germans whilst fishing on the steam trawler Chameleon on August 25th 1914 & subsequently interned in Ruhleben POW Camp until Nov 23rd 1918. Other members of the crew were Cornelius Betts, Edgar Boyce, Edward Burman, Frank Hanneman, Thomas Patchitt, C Rodgers, George Williamson, Benjamin Wilson, all from Grimsby/Cleethorpes area" From the Ruhleben Story website click here
