Some years ago someone - I can't recall who - gave me a brass plate about 2.5 inches square. On it are these words:
U 47 Sunk off Portland May 23rd 1917 By HMY Lorna
I had sometines wondered what the Y stood for. Now I know it is Yacht!
At the time I tried to find out what it was all about. I think that even the Imperial War Mseum did not know.
I didn't like to throw away the plate. I'm glad I still have it, but where it came from, goodness only knows.
