UC18 - taking prisoners???

Hi All, I am looking for some information on a ship I believe my husband's great grandfather to have been on during WW1. The ship was a merchant vessel by the name of Netherton and it was scuppered by UC18 on the 17th of February 1917 with no loss of life. The U-Boat itself was then sunk with all hands the following day. What I would like to know is whether it is likely that the crew of the Netherton would have been taken onto the U-Boat as prisoners and, therefore, perished when it, in turn, was sunk. Thanks for any help you can give me even if it only general in terms of common practice at the time.
Kind regards
Louise
