Does erased from ship hulls, the names of Allied merchant ships during WWI?

Greetings to all.
Does anyone know if the Allied ships and particularly the French, erased the names of the ship on the sides of the bow, during the First World War?
I've been diving in some Allied merchant shipwrecks, sunk by German submarines in the Catalan coast and I could not find any names on the hull of ships. This makes me think that maybe there was some instruction to not identify the merchant, in its routes, and the entrances and exits of ports.
I have not been able to find any documented information on this, although it is true that, to prevent espionage activities in Spanish ports was prohibited to register the names of the ships in their scales, during the war years.
Thank you!
