At the risk of upsetting M Dufeil, I have been an ordinary golfer living in Scotland all my life and have in my mind a story which cannot have been made up about a German U-boat commander in WW1 who surfaced off the west coast of Scotland, off Machrahanish, saw a golf course, was rowed ashore, played the nine holes furthest from the clubhouse, returned to his vessel then recountede this tale in his memoirs after the war.

I cannot have imagined this story; it must have an origin and since I have recounted it many times and enjoyed subsequent hospitality, I would like to prove its fact or its fiction.

M. Dufeil is more than sceptical about the tale and has suggested that it is part of a story book but despite being asked has not informed me of the source. There are several stories of U-boat landings on the west coast of Scotland, U-boats sheltering off Islay etc etc. I simply search for the truth!!
