I have been looking into a similar story, trying to figure out if a local story about a U-Boat making landfall on Islay during the Great War could be true. It can be found some years back in this forum. So far I have drawn a blank.

The sailing instructions of the Imperial German Navy do not underpin the story. They do mention Kintour and Ardmore to the North and South of Glas Uig as suitable anchorages but they do not specify Glas Uig. Any U-Boat commander bold enough to sail his boat into that bay must have known it from pre-war experience. That of course is well possible. Germans did come to the Clyde and the West of Scotland for sailing on British yachts.

Yet sadly there seem to be very few stories about U-boat visits that can be proven. One of course is Johannes Spiess’ sheep raiding as documented by photograph in his book. Apparently there is also solid evidence of Walter Remy’s sheep raids on North Rona. But there is sadly nothing about anyone visiting Islay or playing Golf anywhere for that matter.

So most of the stories are as yet just stories … often retold … and growing with every retelling. The story about the U-boat visiting Islay already made it into an only slightly cheesy love story:
'The Last Wolf' by Margaret Mayhew, 224 pages, 2012. Surely it will be turned into a TV film one day and thus creating its own sort of ‘truth’. “I’ve seen it on TV. It must be true.”

It would be great if real proof on U-boats visiting Scotland during the Great War could be unearthed!
