I read Stoker's Submarine a few years ago and apparently his health was affected during imprisonment. There is the comment by a surviving family member who recalled Stoker would shout "North!North!" in his sleep. The loss of his ship obviously a traumatic event.

Perhas other members can provide additional details on his career.
