Crew Suicide

Hi all.
I in Castles of Steele the author recounts a story told by admiral Simms of a uboat under D/C attack by American destroyers. Once all D/C's were expended, the ships heard the uboat trying to get itself off the bottom. After many hours, (from the story it sounds like it was at least 12) the destroyers heard 25 distinct short, sharp cracks taken to be pistol shots. Nothing more was heard after this.

Does anyone here know anything out this incident?
