Hi Simon,
Thanks for your post. I think your friendly fire theory is very plausible, particularly as the Times account states the patrol vessels opened fire on the U-boat at EXTREME range.

I wouldn't have expected the U-boat to record if it had in fact opened fire on the life-boats. I also assume that the accurate log information on vessel name, tonnage and cargo detail could only have come from a crew member in one of the life-boats?

However I still find it difficult to believe that the crew would be mistaken as to whether or not the U-boat was firing at their life-boats, notwithstanding they could well have been hit by RN fire. My question really is, how common would it have been for a U-boat to fire on life-boats during the course of the war? Or was that totally beyond the pale for them?
