UB 29 - interview with crew member

Paul Schindler, born in 1895 in Saxony, was a stoker aboard UC 61 and was captured along with the rest of its crew at Wissant on 26 July 1917. On 13 March 1918, Schindler (wrongly called 'Schurdler', but definitely the same man) was interviewed by Lt Cariou, commander of the French submarine 'Sirene', with interpreter Marine Engineer Tasizza, at the Seaman's Hospital in Brest. The interview briefly touched on Schindler's time on UC 61, but then concentrated on UB 29 on which Schindler said he had made one voyage of fifteen days from Zeebrugge to Spain. The interview contains mostly technical questions and is handwritten; my typed translation in English covers six A4 pages. Is this of interest to anyone?

Schindler died in Davos, Switzerland, on 26 July 1918 - a year to the day from his capture - and is buried there.

Best wishes
Chris Heal
