WWI U-84 is listed with an unknown date of demise. When my mother died I found a whistle that belonged to my great-uncle. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and WWI. The whistle is sterling silver with etching of "U-84, 3.12.17" on one side, and "Penmarche" engraved on the other side in beautiful cursive script. The date may be inscribed european style, which means it is actually December 3, 1917. Since the wreck was found off Penmarche, France recently, I believe it was sunk 12/3/17. What other reason would there have been to make this expensive silver whistle commemorating that place and that date??
