<HTML> American Subs before WW2 had a odd way of numbering their subs. For example on the conning tower would be a K5 but the actual number was SS36.
The \"R\" class was the same. R1 was actually SS78. S51 (SS162) was the last one, then all were named. Most were named after fish or items from the sea till after WW2 when they were named after Presidents, States, ETC.
