<HTML>Gaijin means a foreigner.

It literally translates as \'outside person\'. Some folks consider it a prejudicial term; I do not and think it is mistaken to feel it is one. I never was bothered to be called a \'gaijin\' when I lived there. The term foreigner in English also can conjur up negative images. So can the word \'alien\' (hey, are you from Mars?), which is a much stronger word than \'gaijin\'.

In Japan, you are an outsider, don\'t deny it. A foreigner living in Japan almost certianly can not read the local language, and probably can\'t speak it. Most foreigners I knew when I lived in Japan could barely order a meal at a resturant without grunting and pointing. \'Foreigners\' also get special consideration and breaks for a thousand little rules the locals have to follow. I\'d rather be a gaijin in Japan than a foreigner in the US.

Now, being called \'kichikubeiei\', THAT is rude, which also happened to me.
