<HTML>Hi Graeme
In my source by K. Wynn it is stated as follows:
U-862 was the U-boat that operated across in the Tasman Sea.
The northernmost point in New Zealand, Cape Reinga, was rounded by U-862
as she moved down the east coast. The boat headed once again in the Tasman
Sea, heading westwards back towards Australia. She never went close to land
as her commander, HK Heinrich Timm kept the U-boat well to the South.
However U-862 was already about 1000 miles West Of Flinders Bay, WA
on the 6/2/1945, when she torpedoed and destroyed the S.S Peter Silvester.
The boat finally return back to base on 15/2/1945.
