<HTML>The information you give is correct. I checked one of my books, "Portsmith-Built" to check some of the facts and rediscovered a telling of the rumors. The most common one is that the US Marlin and Mackerel sunk it while refueling a U-boat. More interesting is a version I had forgotten.
"One story current at the time asserted that a Coast Guard blimp spotted the Surcouf refueling a U-boat off Georges Bank, south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and that the blimp dropped bombs to sink them both."
This is too close the the "CA35" story to be coincidence. A further story is that a diver claimed in 1967, to have found the Surcouf in Long Island Sound.
I do not believe the Surcouf was guilty of these actions, or that she lies off Cape Cod. She was last seen leaving Bermuda, headed for Panama. But is there any truth to the rumors? If, say a blimp, attacked a giant sub with very large guns, the known subs matching the discription are the American Narwhal class and the Surcouf.</HTML>
