<HTML>Thanks for the post. The Surcouf is a story I would love to know the truth to. A couple of minor details I can add from my book on Portsmith Navy Yard history.
The Surcouf arrived at Portsmith on July 27,1941 and left Oct. 29, 1941
The sub was 352 ft long, surface displacement was 3304 tones and she had 3 decks.
The sub carried live chickens and goats for the ships mess. ..Does put a new meaning on "ship's mess" doesn't it.
The yard locked up the boats wine for "safe keeping", but couldn't find it when the Surcouf sailed.
Sabotoge delayed the refit. Someone kept removing parts and throwing them over the side. A diver recovered them.
Since the US still maintained relations with Vichie France, the Surcouf was not officially received by the yard.</HTML>
