<HTML>Dear fellow Forum visitors,
I recently bought "An Operational Necessity" from amazon after reading the review in the Books section.
During the boat's rest on the seabed after an attack, it silts up and cannot be raised from a depth of about 200 metres despite blowing all main ballast, diesel and fresh water reserves, so the Kommandant orders the jettisoning of the keel. The boat is supposed to be a large Monsoon type.
Was such a possibility (of a detachable keel) given to all types of U-boats and has any one Kommandant ever made use of it to save his crew, because obviously he can't save the boat, as it cannot submerge afterwards and thus becomes inoperative.
Thanks in advance for any reasonable answers,
Regards
Io</HTML>
