<HTML>Hi Lawrence
I have a feeling that Bauer was supposed to have carried out an earlier operation to SA in order to assist the Ossewabrandwag(Ox Wagon Guard) in acts of sabotage. The story is a serious rumour in that the following is highly unlikely:
Bauer and his mates were landed on the west coast of SA in a U-boat that was sunk by an unknown RN destroyer. They were were in the water about to land at the time and were rescued by the destroyer. The group claimed to be crew and the fact that they were in civilian clothes escaped the attention of the destroyer's crew! They were interned but Bauer eventually escaped and returned to Germany after commiting various acts of sabotage as well as stealing a large haul of diamonds fron De Beers before leaving SA in a 'four engined' aircraft sent from Germany. The aircraft left from a deserted airstrip near Kimberly and Canaris was so pleased with the operation that he ordered a bottle of 'Bubbly' to be opened on the return trip.
Problems: No U-boats near SA in 1940-1941. No RN destroyer sinkings off the Cape or SA coast prior to U-179 (Sobe) in October 1942. A landing may well have been possible on the remote coastline but the return operation by aircraft would be
a major logistical nightmare.et al...
Check out Robbie Liebrandt's ill-fated attempt to incite revolution and chaos in SA. He arrived by yacht.
A good tale to entertain, possibly! I have the whole story from the planning phase to its glorious ending. As I am at work at the moment, I cannot check out the names of the party involved. Will post them on this thread. Who knows, maybe one rings a bell somewhere????
