<HTML>Ladies and gentlemen:
In self-defense, I must offer the following facts:
In 1985, I visted Kleut Konrad Hoppe at his home in Voerde, Germany. Konrad was the third ranking officer in the HSK MICHEL which sank my ship and took me prisoner.
In 1987, on September 10, exactly 45 years after my capture , I attended a Kriegsmarine reunion in Bremerhaven. Most of the attendees had been in the MICHEL or the UCKERMARK to which I was later transferred.
In 1988, I attended the same reunion, also at Bremerhaven.
In 1993, I attended the same reunion at Kassel.
In 1995, I attended the same reunion at Porta Westphalica.
In 1997, I attended the same reunion at Bremerhaven.
In 2000, I attended the same reunion at Rendsburg.
I look forward to meeting my old enemies at these meetings. I believe they
reciprocate.
In 1998, Kleut Hoppe, for the first time, visited the United States. My wife and I hosted him for two weeks, except for three days that he and I spent in New York. The next year, he was in Florida for a month, and I flew down to spend a week with him and to introduce him to another of MICHEL\'s victims. We constantly correspond, and frequently talk on the telephone.
If you continue to dis-believe me, go to [www.usmm.org] for narrative and photographs.
This is not a record of someone who could be called a German hater.
Auf wiedersehen.
