<HTML>Hi Jim,

Go to [www.ubootwaffe.net] and look under German Sources for information on WASt the German government agency that has the records you seek. There is information there on other sources you might want to look at as well.

You might be able to find someone still alive who served with your father through the U-boot Archiv information there too. Note that uboat.net also has information on contacting the U-boot Archiv. You might also find information on the MOV organization helpful too.

If your father was an officer you might benefit by writing the German Naval Academy.

[www.ubootwaffe.net] has information on contacting all of these sources and many more.

Horst Bredow at the U-boot Archiv is a former U-boat officer and you can reach him by phone. He may have a better idea where to start and he may also have records on your father. He started the Archiv many years age in order to help former U-boat men find each other.

I think there are two things you need to find out first: Which U-boats he served on and if he was an officer, what year he joined the navy. That year is called his Crew year. If for example he joined the German navy in 1933 he would be Crew 33. There is documentation on each Crew that covers all of the men who joined the navy that year so you might be able to find a living person from his Crew that didn't serve in U-boats but that new your father. Of course you might also find someone from his Crew that did serve with him in U-boats.

If you find the U-boat(s) he served in there are probably photographs of them at the U-boot Archiv and at some of the other archives (German or otherwise) listed on [www.ubootwaffe.net].

Also if you post his name and what information you have on him including his date of birth someone here on the forum may be able to tell you more about this service including his U-boats and his Crew year. It is worth a shot.

Many of us have large libraries of U-boat related books and are glad to share whatever information and photos we have.

The logbooks for most U-boats (except for the ones still on U-boats that were lost at sea) are available from the National Archives (and other places) too. See American Sources on [www.ubootwaffe.net]. The members area of uboat.net has a list of all ships damaged or sunk by U-boats along with a narrative of each attack. This section is still under construction and there is some missing information but there is a lot of information that isn't missing. Also many of the attacks are documented in various books that many of us here on the forum have and again are happy to share.

I think once you get the two main questions answered you will be able to find a surprising amount of information on your father's war time experiences. Many of us were drawn to this site in search of our relatives experiences too and people here helped us.

Feel free to e-mail me if there is anything I can help with and perhaps I can find someone who can answer your questions. Nobody knows it all. The trick is to find who knows what and is willing to help and the forum here at uboat.net is a great place to start. Additionally there is a great deal of information on the other parts of this site.

Regards,

Ken Dunn</HTML>
