<HTML> Dear Aktunbuzo, Thanks for the recent update of your diving trip to the North Cape. I see that you were using a fish finder to search for the wreck. I know it's very difficult to use that type of equipment to find a wreck as I have tried using one to fnd a wreck up in Hope Bay, Ontario. We did not have GPS units at the time so making accurate sweeps back and fourth across the bottom was impossible. I share in your frustration.
The Canadian Government said that it only found broken rock in the area. Hummm. Interesting, it said it did not find any wrecks (even ships) at all in the area. I would like to know the section of the Canadian Government that has "anecdotal" evidence of this U-boat wreck. Just to let you know, I myself will not be diving for the unknown U-boat as I live in Ontario, Canada and cannot get out to PEI due to my demanding job requirements. But, I do share in your search for the missing U-boat and will assist you or any other diver in any way I can to find it.
I noted that you met with some hostile locals while you were there. Hummm. Now how is the best way to hanldle the public relations problem here. Well I guess you can either lay low around there with them (avoiding them) or just pleasently chat with them, while your "fishing for information" that is. I guess one of the questions to the local fishermen could be (without revealing the nature of your real intentions to find the U-boat) would be "Hey, do you guys ever get your nets snagged on anything out there in the water". Try to stress to them that you're just recreational divers looking for an interesting dive.
In closing I must say that I am very impressed (use of charts, research, fish finder/GPS sweep scanning technique, etc) with your search for the unidentified U-boat so far. We need to research the world wide web very thoughly for more "bottom information" of that entire area. So far I am starting my seach with more than a dozen good sites to check. It'll take time and the winter is the time to do it. Note, the recent find of the UB-88 U-boat was done using existing Oceanagraphical Sonar information.
My book refers to the position being 1.25 miles off the North Cape. Now you say the water depth is not 95 feet in that area. Supposing it's 12.5 miles off the west side North Cape, what's the water depth???. What about the east side of the North Cape instead??? Also we need to check the chart and find out how far out does the 95 foot depth plateau start. Let me know as I do not have a chart but love to untangle this information to find it. Keep your options open. Do not let yourself get into a "narrow minded" search area for the U-boat wreck by saying it only has to be in that spot because the book or information says so. The Canadian government did get into a "narrow search" and they say there is nothing there. I wouldn't be surprised in the end if you are the one who finds her. You are very persistant at finding this wreck and that may just pay off for you. Sincerely, 1inCanada</HTML>
