On pge 250 - 251 of Michael Gannon's "OPERATION DRUMBEAT", he
describes what happened. U-123 did not sink the SAN JOSE.

It was sunk in a collision with the Grace Line freighter SANTA ELISA,
off Atlantic City, NJ
