\"real\" SS

<HTML>The Allgemeine SS, which I was discretely calling the \"real\" SS, was much more than just the camp guards. It was also the whole police apparatus including the GESTAPO and it served a bunch of party functions. I do not want to get into a long discussion about the various branches of the SS, but Himmler was running a state within a state. In 1940, the Waffen SS was still very much a part of the Allgemeine SS, but as it grew into an elite parallel party army, it became more and more a real military organization. By 1943 it was recruiting the cream of the crop and getting the best weapons, which denied the Wehrmacht both a considerable number of top recruits and the most modern weapons.

It was not unusual for a Wehrmacht general to be intimidated by a GESTAPO Obersturmbannführer (Lt. colonel).
