<HTML>The issue already starts with the swords, only 5 U-boat officers got them including the three top scorers Kretschmer, Topp and Lüth. The other two, Brandi and Suhren, were aces, but far from the top. Lüth and Brandi then went on to get the diamonds, which I presume Kretchmer would also have gotten if he had been around to receive them.
I suspect both Brandi and Suhren got their high decorations because of other factors than number of merchant ships sunk. Suhren was quite a leader and went on to become the FdU in Norway. In the case of Brandi, having been interned in Spain, escaping and returning to the Reich can not have hurt his career. The same goes for the unconfirmed sinking of the cruiser HMS Uganda. He could well have been the most successful commander against British warships in the Mediterranean.
