Or to give him his full rank Oberleutnant zur See.
He was the IWO/first officer/Jimmy the One or what ever different navies call those officers. He did escape and in his attempt to reach Barrow-in-Furness where the U-570 was moored he was, sadly, shot and killed. He was buried locally and in the local church there is an entry in the old burial records for 1941 giving details of his name and rank etc. Due to a misinterpretation one of his names is given as 'Lee' obviously the writer of the document misread the the word 'See'.
At a meeting of U-boat men in Germany in the 1970's I did mention the name of the commander of the U-570, I would have liked to have found out a little more about him, but I was met with a wall of stony silence............the subject was quickly changed and those that I knew forgave me and helped me get over the embarrasing situation.
Should you wish to know more about the subject I suggest you ask anyone apart from former German U-boat men.

This is the place to discuss general issues related to the U-boat war or the war at sea in WWII.
