U-Boats at Corpus Cristi, TX in 1940

<HTML>A story told to my father Otto Adolph Gerloff who was a frequent fisherman at Port Aransas, Texas during the 1930\'s & 1940\'s.

In 1940 many shrimp boats operated out of Aransas Pass, Texas. One of them was about ready to return to Aransas Pass with a full load of live shrimp towed in a partially submerged 12\' decked over wooden skiff. Suddenly a German U-Boat surfaced about 200\' away and pointed many guns at the shrimp boat. The Germans inflated a raft and paddled over and boarded the shrimp boat. The officer who spoke perfect English said he wanted to buy the shrimp, knew how much the fishermen got for their shrimp, knew approximately how many pounds were in the skiff and proceeded to pay them for the shrimp with new $20 dollar bills. Some of the sub\'s crew towed the skiff over to the sub and about 20 crew members pulled the skiff up on the sub\'s deck and dumped all the live shrimp down an open hatch in the sub. They brought the skiff back and the German officer\'s parting words were, \"Germany doesn\'t have anything against Americans but if you keep sending all that oil to England sooner or later we are going to war with you\".
