<HTML>In the German military the offical means of identification is by the SOLDBUCH or paybook . Eccept while at sea each salor would carry this book on his person at all times , if he was on inactive service he would carry his WEHRPASS or service record. When on active service the WEHRPASS was retained at their flotilla headquarters. The SOLDBUCH contained both his military registration number and the inscription and number written on his indentification disc. This information in the book could be checked against the gold colored ID disc that the sailor wore around their necks to see if both matched.
Also for added security when ashore U-boat crews were given a metal disc with a number on it . This oval disc allowed a U-boatmen to enter the bunker box where his boat was moored. I am not sure if all the U-boat bases used this Bunker box ID system . When the boat put to sea this disc along with all other personal belongings were turned in or stored away till the boats return.</HTML>
