Andrew, it's a great story, and I have no problem believing that many honest people believe it.
But there is no record of it occurring. The US couldn't have been stupid enough to let a foreign submarine sail around our coasts on its own. Where did the sub get the money for fuel? How did the sub and the U-boat contact each other?
If an American sub had torpedoed two enemy subs at once, it would be in the history books.
Great yarns survive for a reason: they are interesting. But the story can't possibly be true.
