Originally established in 1872, the CLH Regiment was disbanded following India's independence.

The CLH (the retired ones at any rate) are noted for an attack against a German ship in Mormugao harbour in Goa, on March 9th, 1943. Originally a covert operation led by Col. Lewis Pugh, the mission was only publicly noted in 1978. It was undertaken by 'civilians' so as to obscure who was really behind it - Goa being in neutral Portugese territory - I imagine the German ships had been interned?

The'spy' ship was, apparently, the 'Ehrenfels', the CLH guys arrived on the 'Phoebe'. During the confusion, several other ships in the harbour scuttled themselves, and the Ehrenfels is also listed as scuttled by her crew. There are also some vague references to the kidnapping of Robert Koch, a German civilian (although not the bacteriologist of the same name, he died in the '20's), by the CLH during this raid, which did not go down to well in some quarters.

There is talk of a VC having been awarded, which I doubt. A Col Lewis Pugh Evans who won the VC in WW1 in Belgium, (with the 'Black Watch') so this could be a case of mistaken identity/transposition to fit the theme.

Beyond that I don't know much more, or even how much of this is even bona-fide. Part reality, part fiction, part movie starring Gregory Peck & David Niven.
