On U-864 found recently near bergen Norway, the mercury was not in an amalgam, but was carried in steel bottles like scuba bottles.
The U-234 cargo was as far as I can learn carried in the mine shafts. Uranium-hexaflouride is a very dangerous corrosive gas and I doubt was carried by any U-boat. The flouric acid was added by the Japanese after delivery to their enrichment plant.
The uranium-oxide from U-234 was bound, I gather, for the Tadami armaments factory on Okuno Island in Hiroshima harbour. Lt Commander Miroshi Ishiwatari of the IJN handled uranium shipments. From Hiroshima Lt Col Seiichi Niizuma had the uranium transported to Hungnam (then called Konan) in Korea.
It seems as though uranium would mainly have been carried by transport u-boats rather than fighting u-boats. According to MAGIC decrypts in US archives the first such shipment by u-boat happened shortly after 18 November 1943 and my guess is that UIT-22 had the first such uranium shipment.
