<HTML>good morning everybody.
thank you all for answering to my qesstion.
originally i didn´t want to argue about the men or the advantages and disadvanteges of both types.
you are right when you say that these were different types for different jobs. andyou are right in saying \"choose the right weapon for the right job\".
what i wanted to know is at first: which type had the most acceptance among submariners?
which type has more acceptance now?
(is ist really only VIIC, as you can see almost only this type in tv-series/films?)
i just talked to my grandpa who told me about a good friend of him, karl kasper (or casper) who was on u-89.
he told me this story, that one day he climbed out of the conning tower and saw.......the light of nightly new york city.
so i tried to talk to him about that, but karl is now suffering from some kind of illness and therefore lies in hospital. (hopefully he´ll be better!)
my grand told this story: karl says, he´s celebrating two birthdays. the first is his physical, the second is related to u-boats.
one day - his birthday, on patrol - he gave himself the luxurious privilege of shaving his face. the \"Bootsman\" shouted at him, why he´s wasting good water. after that, the bootsman went away, and karl said \"leck arsch\", not very loud, but the bootman got to hear it, karl got into trouble.
he was sent to a infantry-fighting corps for some weeks as punishment.
on u-89´s next patrol it has been sunk with all men on board.
so this was his second birthday.
sadly, all people who lived during war are one by one dying. it´s hard to get first-hand information.
my other grandpa served on a torpedoboat. he died befor i could talk to him. so i found some fotos from norge, battleship tirpitz in background.
i could never talk.
that´s sad.
so i will go on trying to talk to karl.
i think there were not so much boats in front of n.y.c., especially VIIc´s.
so, i´m looking forward, mayby i can get some fotos or stories to tell you.
have a nice day, and thanks for the discussion.
sincerely, lars.</HTML>
