I recently made a trip to visit the U-2540, U-995, and U-461 in northern Germany. I noticed that the interiors of all of the submarines were painted with a thick coat of yellowish paint. Most fittings and hardware were also painted. Is this how the interior of an operating uboat was maintained? I can imagine the paint inhibiting corrosion but also making it impossible to apply wrenches to pipe fittings for repairs, etc...

This is the place to discuss general issues related to the U-boat war or the war at sea in WWII.
