Hello !

My father was in the Kriegsmarine. The I.D tag will give the person's I.D/ number and his postal number. It will usually not have the ship or U-Boat number on it. This was for security reasons. It will also have his name, Last/First. You can then go to a U-Boat crew search and may locate what Boat or ship he was on. Hope this helps.
