<HTML>Have no experience navigating submarines, however IMHO the normal practices
of mariners would be applicable. A submariner has the disadvantage that
it may not be practical to surface to obtain sights with a sextant to ascertain
or confirm his position. This also would restrict the opportunity to check
compass accuracy. Navigating a U-boat in the N. Atlantic, particularly in winter, was not an easy task. A number of U-boats had very experienced navigators who had obtained master mariners certificates while serving in the merchant marine.
They would be well aware of the disadvantages of running too long on DR
without obtaining sights.
